Caucasian Ovtcharka Description

The Caucasian Ovtcharka is also known as the Caucasian Mountain Dog and is a strong but beautiful giant breed of dog. They were originally bred to guard livestock against predators such as wolves. There is no disputing that the Caucasian Ovtcharka is a stunning breed; they have moderately deep-set, brown eyes with smallish ears which are hard to discover underneath their dense fur! Their tail is a cascade of feathery fur, the limbs are strong-boned and long, the paws are big and fluffy with a covering of hair situated between their toes. There are two different varieties, long and short haired with a gorgeous assortment of coat colours including tan, fawn, pied, grey, and white and brindle.

The Caucasian Ovtcharka is a giant, strong willed breed of dog and because of these traits it is certainly not a dog which is suited to everyone. They need a firm but kind leader as they can be assertive but the Caucasian Ovtcharka is also alert and extremely courageous. They love to be free and require a lot of exercise. It is a natural guardian and makes one of the best watchdogs within the canine world protecting its family with true passion; even any other pets within the household will be considered part of its family. Generally they do not take quickly to strangers and it is vital that they have socialization when young. A dominant, strong dog coupled with loyalty and devotion to its family.
