Lack of Appetite

If your dog suddenly stops eating it can be a very worrying time, especially if your pooch normally consumes everything in its path! It does not automatically mean that there is a serious problem though, so do not start panicking just yet.
There can be several reasons why a normally healthy dog goes off their food. The first thing to look for is other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing or appearing listless. If there are other signs along with the loss of appetite then take your dog to the vet immediately to have him / her examined.

Have you altered your dog’s food at all? If you have then perhaps your faithful friend does not agree with your choice of ‘new’ food! When you introduce a new type of food or even a different flavoured food ensure that you do so gradually. To begin with just pop a small amount of the new food in with the old food and then slowly introduce more of the new and reduce the old.

By doing it this way you are allowing your dog to become accustomed to the new food whilst still consuming their old and trusted food, this will also help to avoid any upset stomach scenarios occurring.

Is your dog eating too many treats? Think about this carefully and be honest, if your dog is having frequent biscuits and treats then this will ruin his / her appetite for their normal food. Always watch your dog’s intake of doggy treats as too many will eventually lead to weight problems along with them possibly going off their food.

Check that the food is fresh and has not gone off, this is especially of the upmost importance during the hot summer months and is more common with wet food than with dry food.

If you ‘free feed’ your dog then be careful as this can often cause them to become very fussy eaters. Free feeding is the term used if you leave a bowl of food down at all times and permit your dog to help themselves whenever they wish.

This is not the best method of feeding your dog as it can cause several problems. Your dog will not really become excited about eating as he / she will soon learn that the food is down constantly anyway so why worry about eating it straight away? This way of feeding can also lead to obesity.

Just monitor your dog carefully when it comes to eating time and if you are in any doubt about your dog’s health then please do take your dog straight to a vet.
