Dogs and Puppies that made it to the Big Screen

Who said that Hollywood and movies are just for people? Beethoven, Lassie, Benji, Marley and the 101 Dalmatians are just some of the few dogs and puppies who made it on the big screen.

It was 1935 when the first movie about dogs entitled “The Adventures of Rex and Rinty” was seen on the big screen. Rinty, a German Shepherd also known as Rin Tin Tin Jr., is the first ever dog to appear in the movies. “Lassie Come Home” derived from a novel followed in 1943. After the movies enjoyed a favorable audience response, more dog movies were introduced to the society.

Approximately five to ten dog movies are shown each year from 1970. From 1974 to 2008, there were more than twenty dog movies that made a huge success in the big screen. One of the most popular of these dog films is “Marley and Me” (2008) that is one of the highest grossing dog movies of all time earning more than $140 million. Among the ten top grossing dog movies are “101 Dalmatians” (1996), “Cats and Dogs” (2001), “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” (2008), “Eight Below” (2006), “Snow Dogs”(2002), “Turner and Hooch” (1989), “102 Dalmatians” (2000), “The Shaggy Dog” (2006), and “Beethoven” (1992). These films grossed from $55 million to $140 on the year that they were shown on the big screen.

These movies about dogs and puppies are great evidence of how these beloved pets affect our lives.  How they give colored varieties to the lives of their masters and how individuals and their pets make a great connection with each other.
