Chihuahua History

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world and there are no larger versions unlike some other breeds such as the Poodle that is available in miniature, toy and standard. The little Chihuahua is simply that a ‘little’ Chihuahua but they certainly make up for their lack of size in their personality.
The history of the Chihuahua is slightly sketchy but it is thought that the breed might of derived from a breed called Techichi dogs, these were kept by Toltec Indians. The Toltecs lived throughout central Mexico from approximately 900 AD to approximately 1150 AD.

The Toltec Indians possessed small and very intricately carved statues of dogs that appeared to resemble the Chihuahua of today and in every grave that was ever discovered of a Toltec Indian there were also the remains of a little Techichi dog found.

The Indians were thought to hold the strong belief that the little Techichi dogs would lead them quickly and safely into the afterlife.

Techichi dogs were slightly bigger than the Chihuahua but would still have been too small to work or do anything more than be a loyal and faithful pet dog.

During the 1850’s some Americans were visiting the USA state of Chihuahua and whilst they were there they happened across the tiniest and sweetest breed of dog that they had ever laid eyes upon. It was, of course, a Chihuahua.

The Americans took some of the dogs back home with them and by the late 1800’s the Chihuahua was being shown at dog shows. The very first Chihuahua to be registered with the American Kennel Club was in the year 1904.
